Current Florida DMV Headlines Spotlight Driver Safety Advancements

New Law Sends Bad Drivers Back to School
This new Florida law which mandates accident prone drivers to a driver education class took effect January
1, 2010. Florida licensed drivers who have three or more at-fault car accidents in a three year period will be
required to successfully complete the course. Any driver who has a crash now and two or more since 2007
will be notified by the department of their responsibility.
The approved course is sixteen hours long, including four hours of driver training in the car, and must be
completed within ninety days of notification.

Highway Fatalities Continue to Decline in Florida
On January 6, 2010 the Florida DMV reported traffic deaths of 2,570 for the year ending 2009. This
number represents a statistical eighteen year low in traffic fatalities. The department commented that
although the number of fatalities is similar to that of 1992 there are now approximately five million more
Florida residents. These are preliminary numbers with the final count coming later this year in the
department’s official annual “Traffic Crash Statistics Report.”

Florida Highway Patrol Releases Results From Holiday Enforcement Campaign
This press release highlights the results of the Dec.16, 2009 to Jan, 3, 2010 holiday enforcement period
which included 46,931 citations issued and 537 DUI arrests. “During this campaign, our troopers focused
on driving practices that put motorists at high risk for a crash,” said Col. John Czernis, director of the
Florida Highway Patrol. Florida troopers continue to lead the way in the nationwide campaign “Drunk
Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.”

Emergency Contact Registration Reaches 3 Million
The Florida DMVs’ Emergency Contact Information program is designed to assist law enforcement in
contacting loved ones of accident victims quickly. The award-winning program is a system whereby licensed
drivers and ID card holders can submit two emergency contacts that can only be accessed by law
enforcement after an emergency like a car crash. This is a free service for Florida residents and
registration is quick and convenient at a
driver license office or through the internet at www.flhsmv.gov/eci.

What are the benefits of using an independent insurance agent?
Independent agents have a vested interest in maintaining a helpful and caring relationship with their clients
over the “long haul”. Being able to turn to a trusted advisor during life cycle events, such as, buying a home,
financing a vehicle, or starting a business can be invaluable.
